DIY Clothes: The Knot Front Dress

DIY Knot Front Dress

Before you throw out your old clothes, turn them into something beautiful. It’s always exciting to refashion and DIY clothes when you have nothing to wear. For this project, I wanted to refashion a dress I found at TJ Max a few months ago. It’s nothing special, just a solid black $9 dress. It looks very plain and almost too long on my short frame. I envisioned it to hug my curves when I saw it on the hanger. I want to give the dress a sexy touch, so maybe I’ll actually wear it out. The knotted front dress is simple to recreate without any skills. It’s casual and cool with the cute cutouts at the waist. If you want to see how I transformed this dress without needle and thread, keep reading.

Minimalist Style Ideas

Although I own more clothes than I”m proud to admit, I have been wearing more basics lately. I don’t think I’m ready to live a complete minimalist lifestyle, but I certainly appreciate the fashion. Minimalist style is more than decluttering and cutting back on your wardrobe. In my opinion, there is no such thing as fashion “rules”. Therefore, minimalist fashion means wearing interchangeable pieces that take the stress out of putting together an outfit every day. I love fashion as much as the next girl, but sometimes you need to spend less time thinking about clothes and more time thinking about important decisions. It’s important to have clothes that you want to wear and look forward to wearing. Minimalist fashion is also more than wearing basics. You can find simple outfits that have small, unique details.

Outfit #1: A chunky knit sweater is great for autumn. I love pairing big sweaters with black leggings or trousers together. This look can come off as romantic and comfortable or edgy cool. You could also accessorize with different scarves and handbags.  For a more old-school appeal, you can also tie the sweater around your waist.

Outfit #2: The next best thing besides a little black dress is a little grey dress. The color gives it a minimal feel, while the texture and neckline make the dress a little more interesting. I’m also very petite, so I fell in love with the length.

Outfit #3: T-shirt dresses have definitely won the hearts of women everywhere. I love wearing this black t-shirt dress for any time of the day. For me, the look is still casual without the jeans.

img_7068img_7228img_7227

Outfit #4: I like to gravitate towards stripes instead of bold prints and overwhelming patterns. Not all striped are created the same. I love striped clothes because there are different sizes of the lines, which gives the outfit more texture. Stripes are also very versatile. For example, this skirt looks great with a black or white top.

Outfit #5: Don’t get me wrong, I live to wear dresses, skirts, and girly things. But I always feel too cool for school when I rock a simple white top and a pair of dark wash denim jeans. There is something so clean and sophisticated about a white top. I love the interesting pattern at the bottom of the shirt. It gives it a more detailed appearance.

img_7072img_7232img_7231

Outfit #6: Nothing says “sexy librarian” quite like the black pencil skirt. You can change out the top for a camisole and add a blazer. There are a lot of things you can do with a simple skirt. The grey top gives the skirt a little gradient effect. You could also wear a white top for a bolder appearance.

img_7070img_7229img_7230

Outfit #7: I like how thin the stripes are on this halter top. Skinny lines seem more girly to me, so I paired it with a black circle skirt. A small jacket or a pair of sheer pantyhose would be great accents for the colder months.

img_7073img_7238img_7237

Outfit #8: White pants should be a staple in every woman’s closet. I like the high waisted look because it’s even more chic and classy. For an extra clean look, you could always wear white on white. However, in my opinion, grey and white is the new black and white.

img_7071

Outfit #9: You can never go wrong with black pants unless you have dogs. None the less, black jeans as so versatile. You can change your top and have a new outfit every day of the week. I like to wear stripes with the dark pants for an edgy and modern look.

How To Create A Minimalist Wardrobe

The minimalist style has become increasingly popular the past few years. Bloggers and Instagrammers have perfected this look as well as celebrities like Emma Watson and Kristen Stewart. This style can look like you are wearing a plain t-shirt and jeans, but if you do it right you can look chic and modern. I have been exploring minimalistic styles and wanted to share with you guys what it means to me. I’d love to know if you love or hate this style and if you incorporate minimalism in your daily lives. Let me know in the comments below and feel free to share it!

What Is The Minimalist Style?

Of course, the idea behind minimalism is “less is more” however this isn’t the only aspect of this particular style. Many people might even associate minimalism as being boring because patterns and colors are often absent. But just because an outfit doesn’t have color, doesn’t mean that it can’t have flair. There is more to an outfit than an outlandish pattern and bright colors. Not only are you rocking neutrals and basics, but you are also playing with textures and clean lines.

I think this style is also about versatile and interchangeable pieces. For example, you can wear that loose, white crop top with a black skirt or a pair of nice trousers. These outfits are basically timeless and can be dressed up or down.

Tips For Minimalist Fashionista Newbies

Buy High-Quality Clothing

The quality of a simple t-shirt can make a huge difference in an outfit. Instead of buying cheap clothing that you will need to repurchase in a year, invest in quality classic essentials.

Consider Downsizing

Take a good look at your wardrobe. You probably have quite a few pieces that you don’t wear anymore. Recycle or donate clothes that no longer fit you or isn’t your most flattering color. Also, getting rid of clothing that has busy patterns will save you time trying to mix and match.

The Small Things Mean The Most

Architectural silhouettes, bold trims, and buttons can transform a basic look into modern glam. Paying attention to the slightest detail can complete an outfit.

Accessories Are Your Best Friends

Limiting your prints and patterns can open a new window of opportunity. This leaves room for accessories like scarves, pins, and fashion jewelry. For example, you can dress up a simple shirt by pairing it with a bold statement necklace. You can create multiple looks by styling your outfits with different jewelry, handbags, and scarves.

Jacket

This is kind of general, but you have to make sure you have a jacket, especially if you travel. You never know what kind of weather you might run into. I live in the desert, so it’s basically hot as hell all year long, but I still have a love for jackets and keep a few in my closet. I like colors because they can add to any outfit.

T-Shirt Dress

Who knew something so comfortable could be so versatile? I love wearing these things anywhere. I never feel overdressed, especially living in Vegas. You can get away with wearing them to the grocery store really. A quick shoe change from sandals to heels can dress the look up. You can layer them with jackets and scarves in the fall or accessorize with fashion jewelry. Need I say more? I love t-shirt dresses.

Cardigan

Not quite cold enough for jackets, but cardigans can be a girl’s best friend. I love layering one over a crop top with a pair of jeans or shorts. You can keep one on you in your purse if you go to the movies or date night. You never know when you might get chilly. I personally like neutral colors so that it matches no matter what top I am wearing. Cardigans are a great way to accessorize a simple look.

img_5943

Long Sleeve Crop Top

I think long sleeve crop tops are a great additional to your fall wardrobe. They keep your arms warm while you show off your belly and you can dress it up or down. Pairing the crop top with a high-waisted skirt or jean balance out the look. You could even layer a collared shirt underneath for a preppy, but comfortable appeal.

img_5938

Comfy T-Shirt

There’s something sexy about putting on a slightly oversized t-shirt. Maybe because it feels like a dress? I’m not sure, but I love t-shirts as much as t-shirt dresses. It’s fun to wear a shirt that makes your boobies stand out, but it feels good to put on a breathable t-shirt. I like wearing them with leggings, skirts or jeans. However you style this look, I feel like a comfy t-shirt is every girl’s must-have.

img_5946-1

Ankle Boots

Every year, ankle boots seem to be trending in the fall time. They look great with flowy skirts or tight jeans. Most ankle boots are not only stylish but comfortable too.  I’m a short little girl standing at 5-foot tall, so I prefer a little height to my boots.

img_6111

Leggings

Who doesn’t love a pair of leggings? Not only are they comfortable, but also so versatile. Since they come in so many styles, it’s nice to have options. There was a point in my life where I lived and breathed leggings. I like how I can run errands in them, come home and change my top. Boom! You have workout attire. You can make leggings dressy or lounge around in them.

img_6108

Baseball T-Shirt

There is something classic about a baseball T.  Maybe because we stole the style from guys fashion and made it even better. More women are sporting this chic and sporty look. I think every woman should have this breathable shirt in their closet.

img_5937

Black Jeans

You can dress up a pair of black jeans with heels or play it down with a t-shirt and flats. I like to wear a cute flannel with them in the winter. Even when you’re trying to look casual with black pants, it comes across a little more sophisticated than blue denim. Thus, making them just as classic.

img_6110

Striped Shirt

I feel like striped shirts are very timeless. Yet another great versatile clothing, you can wear them with anything. I’m wearing a bodysuit, but I like striped cropped tops and t-shirts as well. Stripes give an outfit just enough pattern without it being too distracting. Let’s be honest, striped shirts are a staple for every season.

img_6107

Black Pumps

Pumps come in handy when you need a last minute classy shoe for an interview or special occasion. Even if you aren’t a heel wearer, you have a go-to pair of pumps. They make jeans more girly and dresses more elegant.

img_6106

Sweater

The best thing you could have in your closet is a sweater. You can literally throw them over anything you’re wearing. Skirt, jeans, dresses, well, you get the picture. I believe my new fascination this season will be sweaters. They come in every style and color, so I think I’ll start building my collection this year. I feel like they are so appropriate for any casual occasion.
